Spring 2023 Special Issue Guest Editor
The American Theatre & Drama Society seeks applications for Guest Editor of the Spring 2023 Special Issue of the Journal of American Drama and Theatre, a peer-reviewed online journal.
Description of the Journal: Founded in 1989 and previously edited by Professors Vera Mowry Roberts, Jane Bowers, and David Savran, this widely acclaimed peer-reviewed journal is now edited by Professors Naomi J. Stubbs and James F. Wilson. JADT publishes thoughtful and innovative work by leading scholars on theatre, drama, and performance in the Americas – past and present. Provocative articles provide valuable insight and information on the heritage of American theatre, as well as its continuing contribution to world literature and the performing arts. Please find additional information on the JADT website: https://jadtjournal.org/.
Guest Editor Job Description: The successful applicant will begin work in the summer of 2022, when they will craft and circulate a Call for Papers for the special issue in time for the Association for Theatre in Higher Education conference at the end of July. (For the most recent special issue CFP, see https://www.atds.org/jadt-special-issue-asian-american-dramaturgies/.) The Guest Editor is responsible for editing this single issue. They will keep track of submissions, develop and implement their review procedures such as the review form, curate a guest editorial board to review articles, and correspond with authors. JADT’s Editors will offer guidance on matters like the typical number of pieces in an issue and the production timeline. Managing Editors based at The Graduate Center, City University of New York will carry out copy editing, formatting, and ultimately publishing. The Guest Editor will provide a report to ATDS at its 2023 ATHE Business Meeting that includes the number of received submissions and accepted articles. Workload varies throughout the year, but the Guest Editor should expect to devote up to 10 hours per week to the issue during peak times (following the fall submission deadline, collating reviews and submitting additional edits in the winter, and copy editing and production weeks). The Guest Editor will receive a $250 honorarium for their work.
Applications should include a pitch for the special issue’s topic. Proposals from potential co-editors are welcome. Although the application process is open to all interested individuals, it is expected that the Guest Editor will maintain an ATDS membership in good standing while serving. ATDS currently offers Pay What You Can membership: https://www.atds.org/membership-shop/.
